Nutrient Management for Lawns and Gardens The average Oklahoma lawn has several times the amount of phosphorus needed for the healthy growth of plants. Some samples from the Grand Lake area have 10 to 20 times the phosphorus needed for plants...this suggests that fertilizer is being overused on some landscapes around Grand Lake. This fertilizer washes into Grand Lake and other water bodies, causing pollution and problems. Find out more about nutrients and fertilizer application and the problems associated with excess nutrients.
To help
deal with these problems in the Grand Lake area: 1) A demonstration garden and lawn that highlights less polluting lawn/garden practices has been developed at the Grand Lake Visitor Center. Click here for much more information on the lawn and native flower, herb, and vegetable gardens at the Grand Lake Visitor Center.
Recent Event: Managing Lawns, Gardens, and Golf Courses to Protect Grand Lake's Water Quality Thursday, April 17, 2008 at the Grand Lake Visitor Center. Click here for information and photos from this event.
3) Local nutrient status will be assessed by extensive soil sampling and testing on residential, commercial, and municipal lawns.
