Whole Soil Profile Certification/Recertification Courses

To become a certified soil profiler with the State of Oklahoma, there are a number of requirements and prerequisites.  One requirement is to complete a Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) approved training.  Once certified, profilers must take annual renewal training to become recertified.  The CLEAR GRAND project is sponsoring new certification courses and renewal trainings in the Grand Lake area to help train and maintain a number of local soil profilers.

Click here (or see below) for a schedule of upcoming events.

New Soil Profile Certification Courses

Dr. Brian Carter, OSU soil scientist, will lead fully certified training courses on the use of the Whole Soil Profile technique for establishing the suitability of septic system placement and design.  The course will contain classroom presentation on the basics of soil science, field investigation of soils, laboratory assessment of soil textures, instruction on alternatives to the standard septic system, and development of a clear understanding of the soil profile evaluation technique and the variability of soils in the area.  By completing the course, participants can become certified to perform whole soil evaluations in the State of Oklahoma (if all other prerequisites are met - see p. 12 of the OK Adminitrative Code on On-site Sewage Systems - warning large file (10.7 MB)).

  • First Course: March 2007 (1-2, 8-9, 22) at NEO University Campus & Bernice State Park Nature Center.

  • Second Course, 2008:  March 27-28 and April 3-4, 10 at Bernice State Park Nature Center

Soil Profiler Recertification

Certified Soil Profilers need a recertification each year to remain state certified.   Dr. Brian Carter and DEQ staff will lead annual renewal training courses in the Grand Lake area on the use of the Whole Soil Profile technique for establishing the suitability of septic system placement and design.

  • First course:  November 29, 2006 at the NEO campus in Grove.

  • Second course: September 18, 2007 at the Chouteau Fire Station.
